Design

I was trained at Rolls-Royce to capture requirements and engage stakeholder before developing concepts. I believe a pragmatic design process results in higher quality solutions. Manufacturable, functional, and elegant.

CAD

Expert-level across multiple platforms: Fusion 360, Inventor, Siemens NX, SolidWorks, applied across aerospace, EVs, medtech, and consumer products. I am confident I can quickly adapt to any modern CAD system.

Analysis

I believe in validating designs digitally before committing to physical tests. It's faster, cheaper, and revealing if you know its limitations. Applied to stress, thermal, and fluid analysis. I apply finite-element-modelling to almost every project.

Prototyping

From FDM prints to CNC machining, laser cutting to metal-work. My start-up work has needed fast iterations, and I have 24/7 access to these tools at my MakerSpace. I often use these in my personal time too, building furniture or art.

Soft Skills

An asset I have brought to my recent roles is clarity - of communication, of processes and of timeline. Technical work only has value if it's clearly communicated, and real impact needs a team. I am known for creating a positive and pragmatic working culture.

Business

I am comfortable with spreadsheets and projections, and often own the financial models or techno economic assessments. When founding my own ventures I have often worked on develoment and marketing strategies. I am an effective project manager.

Background

I'm a mechanical engineer based in Berlin, and for 12 years I have had the opportunity to develop incredibly interesting technology. I enjoy challenging problems, and find meaning in products that i know will have a genuine impact.

My engineering career has been a mixture of aerospace corporate roles, start-ups, and my own products, recently predominantly in climate tech. This has included designing rocket pumps, jet engine systems, and an EV battery, from the UK to Rwanda. I am currently leading the mechanical and process engineering function at a carbon sequestration startup in Berlin, who are currently filing for insolvency. For this reason I am looking for new opportunities, and have made this portfolio website.

I founded three ventures — Mek-Tek, Compositive, and Resist — each one an attempt to take an idea all the way from concept to reality. I'm passionate about this process.

Outside of engineering

Every summer since 2019 I've organised a co-created community festival in Berlin. It's the kind of event where the people who come are also the people who build it — and it's one of the things I'm most proud of. I also contribute to other community events, recently designing and constructing an performance space at a Burn festival. Honestly before engineering my real passion is people, and I often think about how and why communities form.

I'm based in Berlin, I speak German (B2), and am out of practice with Spanish (A2). I often perform live music and occasional comedy, and sometimes design and build my own furniture.

"As well as his technical skills, Duncan is collaborative and a pleasure to work with. His meeting style is lighthearted and entertaining, but well balanced with a pragmatic approach to problem solving" - Taiei Harimoto, Head Engineer, Ampersand
