Moltitool
An efficient everyday-carry bike multi-tool — conceived, designed, prototyped, and launched.
Overview
Moltitool started as a personal frustration: existing bike multi-tools were either too bulky to carry or too minimal to be useful. I designed Moltitool from scratch — starting with a clear specification of the most-needed functions, then working through form factor, ergonomics, and manufacturability.
The process ran from initial sketches through CAD modelling, iterative prototyping (FDM and SLS), material selection, supplier sourcing, and finally a marketing campaign and launch. Every stage was handled in-house under Mek-Tek.
Design process
- Market and user research to define the function set and carry format
- Full CAD design in Fusion 360 — compact folding mechanism, integrated hex keys and driver bits
- Multiple prototyping rounds: FDM for form, SLS for functional testing
- Material and finish selection for production: stainless steel body, anodised aluminium accents
- Supplier negotiation and production file preparation
- Photography, copy, and launch campaign
Outcome
A clean, minimal multi-tool that does what it needs to and no more. Launched to market under the Mek-Tek brand.
